Merrimack athletic director placed on leave

NORTH ANDOVER — Merrimack College's athletic director was placed on paid leave yesterday but officials are refusing to say why.

Glenn Hofmann was hired by the college three years ago. He refused to answer questions when approached at his North Andover home last night.

College spokesman Jeffrey Doggett refused to comment on the reason why Hofmann was placed on leave, saying only it was a "personnel matter."

College President Dr. Christopher Hopey did not respond for comment.

Hofmann served as associate athletics director at Niagara University from 2005 until his hiring at Merrimack in February 2009.

Hofmann oversees 22 sports teams at Merrimack, including the nationally ranked men's hockey and lacrosse teams. The Warriors hockey team is the school's only Division 1 sport.

In previous interviews, both Hofmann and Hopey said they hoped to bring other sports to the top NCAA division, including the school's football and basketball programs.

Staff writer Jonathan Phelps contributed to this report.
