NORTH ANDOVER — They move from driveway to driveway under the cover of darkness and search for unlocked vehicles.
Police said thieves struck again overnight Sunday, just weeks after the last string of car breaks was reported in town. This time, they also stole two of the vehicles.
Police are searching for a black 2005 Cadillac CTS, which was stolen from 376 Wood Lane. Also stolen was a Chevy Cobalt from 20 Spruce St., although the vehicle was left behind on a nearby street after it ran out of fuel, North Andover police Detective Dan Cronin said.
Spruce Street is a short residential road off Massachusetts Avenue. Wood Lane is a short distance away.
Cronin said keys were left inside both unlocked vehicles.
In all, he said at least six vehicles were broken into in the area. Only change and small items were reported missing, he said.
Cronin said residents began reporting the breaks yesterday morning. Just as in previous incidents, unlocked vehicles parked in residential neighborhoods were targeted.
"I'm sure there are still a few out there that haven't been reported," said Cronin yesterday. "Most of the vehicles were left unlocked."
Cronin said loose change and a GPS were stolen from unlocked vehicles in town several weeks ago. He said police believe one or two individuals moving from driveway to driveway are responsible for the breaks.
Cronin said the department's message to residents is simple: Don't leave your vehicle doors unlocked.
"And don't leave your belongings in your car," he said.
