---- — LAWRENCE — Police charged a local man with illegally bring a semi-automatic weapon and crack cocaine into a Route 28 chicken joint on Monday night.

Alexander Mojica, 33, of 13 Bicknell Terrace, #2, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and a high capacity magazine and illegal possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Officer Christopher Bussey made the arrest after Detective Claudio Camacho, who was off duty and in Crown Chicken at 204 Broadway, observed suspicious activity there at 9:44 p.m.

Camacho, who’d stopped by to order a steak and cheese sub, saw two men acting shady. One man was trying to sell a restaurant worker a cell phone while the other, Mojica, “was acting as a possible lookout for the man selling the phone,” according to Bussey’s report.

As Bussey and fellow on-duty officer Thomas Murphy arrived at Crown Chicken, Camacho was introducing himself to the man trying to sell the phone. Mojica quickly tried to get away from police, Bussey said.

When Bussey tried to talk to Mojica, “he repeatedly reached for his waistband even after being ordered to keep his hands on the roof of the police car.” A search revealed a black, semi-automatic pistol in his waist band, Bussey said.

A hypodermic needle was also found in Mojica’s pocket along with 12 glassine baggies of crack cocaine, according to the report.

Mojica was placed under arrest. Police also checked out the man trying to the sell the phone. Turns out the cell phone did in fact belong to him and he was released from police custody.
