---- — METHUEN — A water main break on Lowell Street near Hampshire Street slowed traffic yesterday in the area of the Five Corners intersection.

The break occurred at noon near the intersection of Lowell and Pine Streets, between the Patriots Bridge and Central Fire Station. Crews continued working there early yesterday evening.

Methuen Public Works Director Raymond DiFiore said about 30 homes and businesses were impacted.

Traffic on Lowell Street was closed between Hampshire Street and Five Corners for several hours yesterday before being reopened to westbound traffic during the evening commute.

DiFiore said the stretch of road would be closed again in the evening to complete the repair work.

Lowell Street intersects with Pelham, Osgood and Railroad streets at Five Corners.

DiFiore said the water main was installed in 1910. He said a stretch of the road will need resurfacing after it was damaged during the break.
