---- — METHUEN — By popular demand, the city will pick up branches on recycling days this week and next.
In order to take advantage of this service, residents must cut down their branches to four-foot lengths and tie them up.
The city is also keeping the landfill open until Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city has waived the need for a landfill permit between these days for any resident who wishes to dispose of tree debris. There is no charge to drop off brush or tree debris.
Craft fair tomorrow in Methuen
METHUEN — Get a jump on your holiday shopping tomorrow at the Methuen Senior Activity Center’s Annual Holiday Craft Fair.
The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Senior Center, 77 Lowell St. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Come browse through the many assorted crafts, have lunch at the luncheon snack bar, and take chances on some great prizes in the giant raffle.
The day will also feature hourly drawings, a pastry shoppe, jewelry sale and a gift shop table.
Church hosting Veterans Day event
LAWRENCE – St. Anthony’s Maronite Catholic Church will be host its 4th annual Veterans Day event, Sunday Nov. 11 at 145 Amesbury St. The parish will hold a Mass in honor and memory of all its veterans at 9 a.m. Any veteran wishing to participate in the procession into the church should be in the church foyer by 8:30 a.m. A breakfast reception will follow in the church hall. HAVERHILL – Ruth’s House, a non-profit thrift store/ clothing pantry at 111 Lafayette Square, is in need of gently used winter clothing and donations of new socks and underwear in all sizes to supply an expected need during the winter months..
You may also drop off donations for the Sacred Hearts food pantry.
All donations are tax deductible and donors will be issued receipts for their gifts. Donations may be dropped off on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The thrift store is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday. Lahey Clinic honors veterans at high risk for lung cancer
BURLINGTON - Lahey Clinic is calling on all veterans in the area to visit on Nov. 8 for a risk assessment for lung cancer. The times are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 41 Mall Road.
The clinic has joined the Lung Cancer Alliance, the Vietnam Veterans of America and other screening centers across the country to honor veterans by alerting them to their potential risks and the life-saving benefit of CT screening.
“Low dose CT lung screening has been proven to save lives in people at high-risk for developing lung cancer,” said, Dr. Andrea McKee, chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at Lahey Clinic. “Please visit us in Burlington on November 8th or call us at 1-855-CT-CHEST to see if CT lung screening is appropriate for you.”
Veterans have a 25 to 50 percent higher risk for lung cancer than their civilian counterparts due to smoking and exposures to known carcinogens, including Agent Orange.

Excellence Award for Anton’s Cleaners
TEWSBURY – Anton’s Cleaners , which has 41 stores including in Methuen and North Andover, was recently presented with the 2012 Community Excellence Award by the Massachusetts Family Business Association.
Anton’s was cited for its successful Coats for Kids community relations program, which collects, cleans and distributes approximately 60,000 coats to families each year. Arthur Anton, Jr, COO, and Charles Anton, CEO, accepted the award on behalf of Anton’s Cleaners at the annual 2012 Family Business Association Awards for Massachusetts.
The Family Business Association is a non-profit organization created to honor family businesses.
