---- — ANDOVER — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in the basement of 478 River Road yesterday morning.

Fire Chief Michael Mansfield said an occupant called 911 around 8:07 a.m. because the furnace in the basement was on fire.

“They quickly knocked down the fire within five minutes,” Mansfield said. Crews stayed at the scene for about an hour to investigate the cause of the fire.

There is damage to the heating unit and smoke damage to interior furnishings, but the family is allowed to stay in the home, the chief said.

Mansfield said this is the fourth similar fire in the past three weeks. Reports show the two were likely caused by electrical issues and two from the heating units.

He encouraged all residents to have their heating units properly serviced to prevent such fires.
