Police Log

HAVERHILL — Police said a group of three males who were walking away from a disturbance that took place at Swasey Field appeared nervous when questioned. While conducting a pat frisk, officers found that one of them had a stun gun in his pocket.

Police charged Devaughn Johnson, 18, of 20 Grove St., #2 with possession of a dangerous weapon. Johnson was arraigned on the charge yesterday in Haverhill District Court. According to the Essex District Attorney’s Office, Devaughn was ordered held on $5,000 cash bail. He must appear in court March 15 for a pre-trial conference.

Police Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said that on Thursday at 6:45 p.m., officers responded to Swasey Field on Blaisdell Street on a report of a disturbance. When they arrived a group of people who were on the field began to scatter. Thompson said Patrolman James Coutreau noticed three males leaving the area. He said Coutreau approached them and said there was a disturbance at the field and that he was checking into it.

“While talking with the three they appeared to be nervous,” Thompson said. “The officer conducted a pat frisk and discovered one had a hard object in his pocket which was found to be an electronic stun gun.”

According to the report, the stun gun was fully functional, Thompson said.

“They are illegal to own,” he said. “Even with a firearms license you can’t have one.”

Thompson said police are investigating.
