White powder scare may be part of spree

LAWRENCE — A white powder scare at a Canal Street office Wednesday may be connected to a string of similar discoveries at business across the Merrimack Valley in mid-November, police said.

A card with white powder sent to Arbour Counseling could be part of the same batch sent on Nov. 16 to businesses in Methuen, Lawrence and Haverhill, police said.

The powder found Wednesday was not harmful. The samples found in three envelopes in November turned out to be baking soda.

The envelope opened Wednesday was postmarked Nov. 16 but did not reach the counseling office until January because of an address problem.

A worker in the counseling office opened the car and then noticed white powder on her fingers, according to a report by Detective Brian Voisine.

On Nov. 19, envelopes containing baking soda were sent to Home Depot at the Loop in Methuen, Home VNA at 350 Merrimack St., Lawrence and Edwards Law Office at 36 Bailey Blvd., Haverhill.

Police, fire and the regional hazardous materials team all investigated those incidents, which were sent by a Haverhill man described by authorities as “mentally ill.”
