Merrimack Valley in a Minute: Film featuring Thelma Todd to be shown Feb. 2

---- — LAWRENCE — “Horse Feathers”, a Marx Brothers comedy classic featuring Lawrence’s own Hollywood star, Thelma Todd will be shown Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at Lawrence Heritage State Park, 1 Jackson St.

The film focuses on college football and a game between the fictional Darwin and Huxley Colleges.

The movie is peppered with jokes about the amateur status of collegiate football players and how eligibility rules are stretched by collegiate athletic departments. “Horse Feathers” is best known for having the greatest football related scenes in the history of film. At the end of the movie, the four stars win the game by taking the ball into the end zone in a horse-drawn garbage wagon that Pinky rides like a chariot.

Snow date is Feb. 10.

AmeriCorps fellows to help Neighbors

in Need in Lawrence

LAWRENCE — On Monday, five AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows and three Community Day Charter Public School Teaching Fellows will participate in a Day of Service in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

The teaching fellows will donate their time in support of the Neighbors in Need program working at their Andover warehouse (17-18 Dundee Park Drive) sorting donated food items, filling bins, and stocking shelves. Neighbors in Need feeds more than 500 families each week at 11 neighborhood food pantries providing food to most Lawrence residents within walking distance of their homes.

AmeriCorps Community Day Teaching Fellows have committed a year of service as apprentice teachers. The AmeriCorps program helps to maintain and improve a high level of student achievement while allowing more students to be served and increases the level of engagement in the community.

The annual event honors Dr. King’s legacy and is an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others. The MLK Day of Service coincides with the 57th Presidential Inauguration, which also includes a National Day of Service during the same weekend.

Oral health fair

Jan. 26 in Lawrence

LAWRENCE — The second annual “Healthy Teeth, Healthy Families,” oral health fair will be held Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 3, at the Lawrence Senior Center, 155 Haverhill St.

The fair will offer an array of free dental care services. Several local dentists will be available to provide information about accessing dental care services in the area.

There will also be a short educational sessions about proper brushing and flossing techniques from infancy to adulthood, care of dentures and partials.

The oral health fair is sponsored by the City of Lawrence Mayor’s Health Task Force.

The Constitution: What does it

really say?

ANDOVER — The Center at Punchard (The Center) at 30 Whittier Court is offering a course on the U.S. Constitution on Thursdays Jan. 17, 24, 31, February 7 & 14 at 1:30 p.m. $15. Don Robb instructor.

Everyone talks about supporting the Constitution, but how many of us know what it actually says? What does it say about the powers of Congress? of the President? of the states? of the people? This course will look at the actual words of the Constitution and explore how Americans (and the Supreme Court) have decided what it means, as well as what it says, and how a document written in 1787 can still guide the country today.
