Police catch fourth gang member at courthouse

LAWRENCE — Gang member Clarence Allen came to Lawrence District Court yesterday to watch the arraignment of his three friends, police said. He left in handcuffs after a bystander wrestled him to the ground following a scuffle with detectives.

Allen, 18, of 227 Lawrence St., was wanted on warrant for armed robbery when a trio of Lawrence police detectives spotted him inside the courthouse.

The detectives were also there to attend the arraignments of three teenage members of “Everybody’s Killers” or “EBK,” a local gang of thieves wanted in connection with a spate of recent robberies and shootings in the city.

Lawrence police Chief John Romero said the detectives came to court knowing other members of EBK might show up too.

“We knew the players in the group,” said Romero. “We thought they might be there and sure enough they were.”

Allen was one of two teens spotted inside the courthouse yesterday by detectives, but only Allen had a warrant out for his arrest, according to a police report written by Det. Barry Desjardins.

Allen became loud as one of the detectives pushed him against a wall. He then ran for the exit after slipping from the detective’s grasp.

“These detectives yelled for him to stop,” wrote Desjardins. “He refused and kept running towards the exit. As he passed the metal detectors he pushed them over. As he went to exit out the door, a bystander wrestled him to the ground.”

A brief struggle ensued after detectives caught up with Allen, who was handcuffed and brought to the police station.

Allen was charged with resisting arrest. He is also a suspect in a Dec. 17 armed robbery of a 15-year-old member of the Lawrence High School basketball team at the intersection of Farnham and Osgood streets.

Arraigned yesterday were Michael Tesaun Alicea, 19, Richard Mora, 18, and Ruben Saldana, 18. The teens were each held on $500,000 cash bail after being charged with armed robbery and related charges stemming from an incident Friday at a 280 S. Union St. market.
