School Committee seeks nominations for town's Educator Hall of Fame

By Paul Tennant

---- — NORTH ANDOVER — If there was a particular teacher in the North Andover public schools who had a positive impact on you, now might be the time to express your appreciation.

The School Committee is seeking nominations for the North Andover Public Schools Educator Hall of Fame. The deadline is March 1, so those who have candidates in mind for the honor need to hustle.

Last year’s honoree was John Minihan, a longtime world history teacher at North Andover High School whom many former students credited with making history come alive in his classroom. He was nominated by Mary Gregoire, who had Minihan as a teacher in the 1970s and how heads the English department at North Andover High.

Other recipients include Arthur Forgetta, honored in 2009, who began teaching mathematics at North Andover High in 1959 and retired as chairman of the math department in 1993; Judith Hillner, honored in 2011, who began teaching fourth grade at Franklin School in 1968, then transferred to Atkinson School in 1988 and retired as assistant principal in 1999; and Gerald Sanford, also honored in 2011, who started in 1969 as an English teacher at North Andover High School and retired in 2004 as chairman of the school’s English department.

Sanford returned to the high school as a long-term substitute English teacher in 2011.

There was no recipient in 2010.

A candidate for the award must be retired for at least five years and should have spent most of his or her career teaching in North Andover. A candidate may be living or deceased.
