---- — NORTH ANDOVER — For some time, Lawrence and North Andover officials have been considering a swap of land parcels near the Lawrence Municipal Airport, according to selectmen Chairman William Gordon.
The airport is interested in acquiring land the town owns at the end of one of the runways, Gordon said. The land would not be used to lengthen the runway, but would serve as a safety area for planes that overshoot the runway, he explained.
In exchange for giving up that parcel, the town would acquire land near the intersection of Sutton Street and Terminal Road, Gordon said. Several residents have suggested the town could build a fire station at this site.
The selectmen were scheduled to talk about the possible land swap Monday night, but had to postpone the discussion because no Lawrence officials showed up, Gordon said. The idea has “been on the table” for several years, he noted.
