Man stabbed in back, cellphone stolen in daytime attack

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — LAWRENCE — A 33-year-old local man was stabbed in the back and had his cellphone stolen during a brazen, broad-daylight assault at Andover and Foster streets Thursday.

The victim said he was heading east on Andover Street near Foster Street around 4 p.m. when two men approached him from behind. He said he was talking on the phone at the time when he felt a pinch below his right should blade and the two men grabbed his phone and ran off.

He said he reached back and felt blood coming from his back and realized he’d been stabbed.

He walked home and his friend drove him to the hospital.

He said he didn’t get a good look at the two man. The stab was not life-threatening, police said. An investigation continues.

Victim applauds quick police action

NORTH ANDOVER — An Edgelawn Ave resident was thanking the police department after quick recovery of her car after it was stolen early yesterday morning.

Caroline Francis, 30, said she woke up unexpectedly at 4 a.m. yesterday to hear her car, an Acura TSX, starting up. Running to the window, she saw it leaving her driveway — triggering an immediate 911 call, she said.

“I didn’t have my license plate or anything,” she said. “I called the police department, and dispatch took it right in their hands.”

Five minutes later, she got a call back from the station saying they had her car stopped by the Market Basket on Route 114 in Lawrence, she said.

Andover Police Lt. Charles Gray said the car was being driven by Aaron Dean-Ganek, 22, of 7 Walker Road in North Andover. He was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license and two counts of receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

The second charge stemmed from another stolen vehicle from Fountain Drive in North Andover, the keys for which were in Dean-Ganek’s pockets, Gray said.

Lawrence and State Police assisted in the arrest, according to Gray.

Yesterday afternoon, Francis stopped by the station to pass a few gift cards and a thank you note to the officers on the call for their quick work.

“I’m a new graduate, just finished nursing school. I’m stressed enough, and this is huge,” she said. “They saved me so much money.”

Police investigating 20 car breaks

NORTH ANDOVER — Police are investigating a rash of car breaks over the weekend involving 20 cars.

First, police responded to seven calls about cars being entered on Surrey Drive Friday. The thefts were reported between 5:53 and 9:06 a.m.

Sunday, police received reports of nine vehicles being broken into on Cotuit Street from 9:39 and 11:35 a.m. Two other streets saw two reports each: Edgelawn Ave, at 11:12 a.m. and 2:18 p.m.; and Enfield Street, at 12:29 and 2:09 p.m.

The vehicles were the targets of what North Andover Police Lt. Charles Gray called “car phishing,” where a suspect tries moving the handles of cars to see if the doors are unlocked.

In a lot of the cases above, the cars weren’t locked, according to Gray.

The total losses are unknown as police are still “waiting to see what people are missing,” Gray said.
