Teen charged in I-495 rollover

ANDOVER — The teenage driver who caused a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 495 last week has been charged with a marked lanes violation, according to state police.

The 17-year-old boy, whose name has not been released because he is considered a minor by the state police, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Geo Prizm onto I-495 south from the I-93 north ramp.

He darted across two lanes of traffic, lost control of his car, then struck the guardrail and spun out of control and back into traffic, where he was hit by a tractor-trailer, police said.

The truck rolled over, came to rest on its left side, and completely blocked two lanes of traffic.

Truck driver Varry Ramos, 33, of Worcester was pinned inside his overturned cab, which ended up in a brook off the highway's shoulder. Andover firefighters used a hydraulic tool to free him from the wreckage.

A medical helicopter landed on the highway and shuttled Ramos to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he was treated for his injuries.

The Prizm's driver and his 47-year-old male passenger, both Attleborough residents, were taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment.

The mangled car they were riding in was carried away on a flatbed truck.

The older passenger, Larry Armstrong, was treated for minor injuries and released.

State police said the investigation continues and more charges could be filed.
