LAWRENCE — School Committee members voted 6-1 tonight to suspend indicted Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy without pay.
Committee members also voted unanimously to notify Laboy of their intent to fire him.
Laboy has 10 days to request a hearing before the committee to discuss the committee's intent to fire him, said School Committee attorney Naomi Stonberg.
Stonberg suggested the hearing be scheduled between March 23 and 27.
The committee voted unanimously to make the hearing public. Stonberg said the hearing will likely take "a couple of nights."
School Committeeman Mark Gray voted against suspending Laboy. He said after the meeting that Laboy should be fired immediately.
Neither Laboy nor his lawyer, Scott Gleason, attended tonight's meeting.
Laboy pleaded not guilty today to eight charges of fraud and embezzlement and one count of illegal possession of alcohol on school premises. Laboy allegedly used school workers to do errands at his home, including electrical work, taking out the trash and chauffeuring his son and grandchildren. He also allegedly used school workers to design menus and magnets for his Methuen pizza shop that were printed for free on the schools' $489,000 printing press. Laboy faces one count of illegal possession of alcohol on school property for the 16 bottles of liquor found in his office during a police raid on his offices last June.
