South Broadway salon robbed at knifepoint

LAWRENCE — A man armed with a kitchen knife robbed the Sunset Tanning and Hair Salon at 319 S. Broadway, escaping with $260 cash.

Salon worker Julie Rutkowski told Detective Carlos Cueva the man walked into the store, walked around the counter and pulled out the kitchen knife, and then pointed the knife as if to strike her with it.

She said the man pointed to a cabinet where the money was and opened a box that was in the cabinet and took the money before fleeing down Groton Street and disappearing.

The robber was described as 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds, with a stocky build, medium to light skin, and a scruffy beard, and wearing a black or dark blue sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head.

Rutkowski told police she did not remember what the man said, but that he spoke with a heavy accent.

Police searched the area but were unable to find the man.

The robbery occurred about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.
