Hospital hosts a chocolate and champagne night for women only

LAWRENCE — Lawrence General Hospital invites women to an evening of champagne and chocolate in celebration of the opening of a new imaging services pavilion.

The gala event takes place Thursday, March 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will tour the new facility, meet the medical team, and learn why Lawrence General has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, all while enjoying chocolate and champagne provided by local businesses and chocolatiers.

'Laugh Yourself Healthy' at NECC event

HAVERHILL — Northern Essex Community College's Life Long Learning program will present Richard Mullen of Georgetown in "Laugh Yourself Healthy," on Thursday, April 1, at 2 p.m., in the Technology Center on the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St. Admission is $2.

Mullen, a natural health educator, gelatogist, hypnotherapist and comedian will show you how to incorporate laughter into daily life. Gelatology is the study of the effect humor and laughter has on the human body. Laughter is known to help decrease depression, lower blood pressure, strengthen core muscles, clear lungs and airways, and increase blood flow to the brain.

The Women's Fund grants. The Danvers-based group was founded in 2003 to raise money for nonprofit organizations in Essex County for women and girls.

Grants are awarded annually to fund one field of focus on a rotating basis: health and well-being; leadership and empowerment; and economic self-sufficiency and security. It has awarded more than $300,000 to date.

Candidates forum set in Andover

ANDOVER — Want to learn more about the candidates running for the Board of Selectmen and School Committee in the election on March 23? Tomorrow you'll have a chance, when the League of Women Voters of Andover/North Andover hosts a candidates forum at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall Library, 2 N. Main St.

The forum will provide the three candidates running for office the chance to make opening statements and answer questions.

Voters on March 23 will be asked to elect two selectman and two school board members, each for a three-year term.

The only contested race is for selectman. Running for the two open seats are incumbents Alex Vispoli and Jerry Stabile and Lawrence Bruce. The School Committee race is uncontested. Running for the two seats are incumbent Dick Collins and Paula Colby-Clements. Both will be at the forum.

The moderator will be Eva Valentine of the League of Women Voters of Greater Haverhill. The forum is free and open to the public. It will be broadcast live and rebroadcast periodically on cable channels 8 (Comcast) and 47 (Verizon).
