METHUEN — Sixteen-year-old Kasey Walko carved a dreamy scene with a sun setting over mountains into a piece of balsa foam to win top honors in the Scholastic Art Awards Globe Show.
The Methuen High School junior's work, along with photographs shot by 17-year-old senior Brian Dunne, another top-finisher, will now be heading to New York to be judged nationally. Dunne's work includes portraits of friends.
The Globe Show is an annual competition where art teachers nominate their strongest students to compete against other teens from across the state, Methuen High officials said.
Walko and Dunne won Gold Key awards. Fellow students Elizabeth Hajjar and Xavier Garcia won Silver Key awards. Hajjar won the award for digital art by using the computer program Photoshop to replicate images of herself and one friend in her backyard on one background.
"It looks like there's 20 of us all in the same place at the same time," Hajjar said.
Garcia won the award for photography with a shot of his friend sitting on a porch wearing shorts and Nike brand Skate or Die skateboarding shoes. Garcia aptly titled the piece "Skate or Die."
All four students' work will be on display in the Boston State Transportation Building until March 19. There will be an award ceremony Feb. 14 at the John Hancock Hall in Boston.
Students receiving honorable mentions in the contest were: Drew August, Kevin Dunn, Ashley Goyau, Mackenzie Leduc, Ashley Holmes, Jake Peters, Hayley Dolbeare, Taffy Kambarami, Vicky Lavigne, Brianne Lewis and Brystal Vazquez.
