LAWRENCE — Thieves broke into the office of the Criso Libertador Church and took cash, checks and documents from a safe box, police said.
Officer Radames Gonzalez was sent to the church at 620 Essex St., second floor, about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday after police received a call notifying them of the break-in.
A church spokeswoman told Gonzalez she noticed the box, equipped with a digital lock, had been pried open when she went to put a money offering she'd received in it, police said. Thieves left behind a rubber stamp, which was in the box, police said.
There were no signs of forced entry and a rear stairway access door was found open. The church was last visited on Sunday, and was locked up about 8:30 p.m.
