North Andover attempted murder suspect captured

Man accused of trying to shoot girlfriend's mother

A North Andover man wanted for allegedly beating his live-in girlfriend and then trying to shoot her mother was arrested in Salem, N.H., yesterday, police said.

Edward Manzi, 47, of 125 Windkist Farm Road was arrested at 9:33 a.m. and charged as a fugitive from justice and taken to the Rockingham County Jail in Brentwood, N.H., police said.

He was also charged on a warrant obtained by North Andover police for attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a household member and illegal possession of a handgun.

North Andover police obtained Manzi's arrest warrant after his girlfriend reported the violent incident to North Andover police about 4 p.m. Saturday.

The woman told police Manzi beat her and then tried to shoot her mother when she tried to protect her. Manzi pointed a gun at the mother but for some reason it didn't fire, according to North Andover police.

The weapon, a loaded semiautomatic, was later found in the 500 block of Boston Street following a police search.

The victim, who was in her 30s, was treated at Lawrence General Hospital and released Saturday.

She later obtained a protective restraining order from police.

Police had been looking for Manzi since Saturday evening. He was reportedly driving a green 1993 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck with a Massachusetts license plate of 865SBK.

The details surrounding his arrest in Salem were unavailable from police last night.
