LAWRENCE — Taste buds will be tested during the Heroes of Lawrence Chili Cook-off and Music Festival on June 7, sponsored by the Lawrence Rotary Club Foundation.
The second annual event also features a car show with registration at 10:30 a.m., children's activities and food.
Cooks will compete for the People's Choice Award for the best chili recipe.
The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. in Pemberton Park off North Canal Street on the banks of the Merrimack River. Admission is $5 per person, and includes chili sampling and entertainment by the B Street Bombers and others. Children under 5 are admitted free.
The city's police, fire, teachers and EMTs will all be honored. Proceeds will benefit Rotary-supported children's causes.
Yard sale tomorrow at Haverhill temple
HAVERHILL — Kadima Community Day School (formerly Solomon Schechter Day School) will hold an indoor yard sale at Temple Emanu-El, 514 Main. St., tomorrow from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Kadima will hold its final annual Spring Gala/Tribute to 27 years of Jewish Day School education on June 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., also at Temple Emanu-El. The Healer of the World Award will be presented to Larry Cowan of Cowan Insurance in Haverhill.
Documentary set on Haverhill fire of 1882
HAVERHILL — "A City in Ruins: The Great Conflagration of 1882," a video documentary about the fire that destroyed Haverhill's downtown shoe district on Feb. 17 and 18, 1882, will be presented tomorrow at 7 p.m. on the big screen in the studios of Haverhill Community Television, 60 Elm St.
This documentary features longtime local reporter and columnist Barney Gallagher and local historian/author Charles Turner, and was produced by Jay Cleary, who hosts a program on HCTV.
Available seating to this free event is limited and on first-come, first-served basis, due to the size of the station. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Future showings will be at the Haverhill Historical Society and the Haverhill Firefighting Museum.
Time to register for cancer walk
METHUEN — The 24th annual Holy Family Hospital Care for Cancer Walk will be May 31.
Walkers will be treated to a barbecue, music and more upon completion of the 3-mile event, which steps off at 10 a.m. from the hospital on East Street. Entry fee is $20 for those older than 12. Check-in is promptly at 9 a.m.

Last year, about 600 people from the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire participated and collected more than $100,000 for the William L. Lane Cancer Center.
'Mama Mia' screened for women in Hampstead
HAMPSTEAD, N.H. — "Ladies Night Out" returns to the library on Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a free screening of "Mama Mia," starring Meryl Streep.
In addition to the movie, there will be food.
Sandown plans Memorial Day parade
SANDOWN, N.H. — The town's Memorial Day parade will start at noon May 25 at the depot.
Line-up starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Sandown Depot. The parade will proceed south on Main Street and stop briefly at the war monument on the Town Hall lawn. At the monument, children are encouraged to place tokens of appreciation, such as flowers, flags or pictures, to Sandown's war veterans.
The parade will continue to Center Cemetery. Limited shaded seating will be available in the cemetery.
All local organizations, political officials and veterans are encouraged to march. Children are invited to decorate their bicycles or wagons, or dress up in red, white and blue.
Retired Lt. Col. Kevin Major will lead a remembrance to a soldier killed during the Civil War. Veterans who attend will be recognized.

The Timberlane Middle School marching band will provide music for the parade.
Underage drinking to be discussed
HAVERHILL — The perils of underage drinking and what parents and students can do to intervene will be the topic of discussion when Maricruz Lora of the Essex County District Attorney's office presents "Teen Drinking is not a Minor Issue," Wednesday at 6 p.m., in the library at Haverhill High School, 137 Monument St.
This event is sponsored by the Haverhill Community Violence Prevention Coalition and the high school's Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) program. The Haverhill Community Violence Prevention Coalition has been working within the Haverhill community to unite citizens in taking a collective stand against violence.
