Two Lawrence men dead in hit-and-run on Route 128

Vehicle carrying five city men rolled over

BURLINGTON — Two of five Lawrence men traveling in the same vehicle died from injuries in a rollover caused by a hit-and-run driver on Route 128 yesterday morning, state police said.

State police later arrested Robert Carlo Jr., 29, of Bedford, and charged him in connection with the deaths.

Carlo was driving a 2008 Ford pickup truck on Route 128 south in the second lane from the left when he swerved into the lane to his right and struck a 1996 Ford Explorer shortly before 7 a.m., police said.

The driver of the Explorer lost control and the vehicle spun out and crossed into the far left lane, hitting a 2008 Dodge Durango carrying the five Lawrence men.

Both the Explorer and the Durango rolled over as Carlo fled in the pickup truck, state police said.

The dead were identified as Alberto Maza, 22, and Juan Condorie, 43, both of Lawrence.

The other three men in the Durango were identified as Albert Fernandez, 24, Alex J. Francisco, 20, and Carlos Maza, 35, and they were taken to Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

Lahey Clinic spokeswoman Margie Coloian said last night that Fernandez and Carlos Maza were discharged and that there were no hospital records on Francisco.

It was not known where the five were headed. Police said Fernandez was driving the Durango.

Fernandez, Alberto Maza and Francisco were ejected from the Durango, police said. Condorie and Carlos Maza were trapped in the vehicle.

Alberto Maza was pronounced dead at the scene.

Condorie was flown by helicopter to Boston Medical Center, where he died in the afternoon.

It was not known whether Alberto and Carlos Maza were related.

The driver of the Explorer, Jose M. Martinez, 29, of Woburn, also was thrown from his vehicle, but suffered only minor injuries, police said. He also was taken to Lahey Clinic.

Meanwhile, state police traced the pickup truck to the Boston Sports Club in Lexington, where it had been abandoned.

Just before 1 p.m., they found Carlo at a Friendly's in Bedford.

Carlo was charged with two counts of motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Woburn District Court.

Due to the crash investigation, Route 128 south was closed intermittently for more than two hours.
