Lawrence man faces firearms charges

Three roommates also arrested

LAWRENCE — A Fern Street man is to be arraigned today on several firearms charges after he allegedly fired up to six gunshots "over his head" in his neighborhood early yesterday, police said.

Richard Anthony, 23, of 71 Fern St., Apt. 1, was arrested on charges of carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card, according to a police report.

A neighbor called police at 4:43 a.m. after hearing a commotion outside. The neighbor went to a window and saw a man in a red baseball cap and red basketball jersey "holding a gun over his head," the police report said.

After firing four to six shots in the air, the man tucked the gun into his waistband and walked into an apartment at 71 Fern St., the witness told police.

Minutes later, police found Anthony, who matched the neighbor's description, inside his Fern Street apartment and placed him under arrest. Three roommates, Juan Tejada, 19, Pedro Berroa, 22, and Stalin Abad, 20, were also arrested. Tejada was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest while Berroa and Abad were charged as keepers of a disorderly home, the police report said.

Police recovered a .32-caliber semiautomatic handgun stowed in a blue storage bin behind the home. Numerous shell casings were retrieved from Fern Street, police said.
