Four arrested in week-long drug probe

LAWRENCE — Four people were arrested in a Morton Street apartment Tuesday afternoon following a weeklong investigation by members of the Essex County Drug Task Force.

Steve O'Connell, spokesman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's office, said the investigation included a hand-to-hand drug buy involving Amado Colon Jr., 46, 27 Morton St.

After Colon's arrest at the Morton Street address about 2:30 p.m., drug detectives served a search warrant that turned up a Kel-Tec pistol with the serial number obliterated, ammunition and trafficking levels of heroin.

Colon was charged with possession of a firearm without a firearms identification card, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card, improper storage of a firearm, trafficking heroin over 14 grams, possession of heroin with intent to distribute near a school or park.

The investigation continued, and resulted in the arrests of three other people at the apartment, O'Connell said.

Luigi Cabrera, 22, 197 Prospect St., was charged with trafficking heroin over 28 grams, conspiracy to violate drug laws, and possession of heroin with intent to distribute near a school or park.

Laura Cabrera, 23, 197 Prospect St., was charged with trafficking heroin over 28 grams, conspiracy to violate drug laws, and sale of drug paraphernalia near a school or park.

Pedro Berroa, 24, 3 Newton St., was charged with trafficking heroin over 28 grams, possession of heroin with intent to distribute near a school or park, and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

At their arraignments yesterday in Lawrence District Court, bail was set at $150,000 for Colon, $35,000 for Berroa, $25,000 for Luigi Cabrera, and $15,000 for Laura Cabrera, who is also being held on an ICE detainer, O'Connell said.

All were ordered to return to court on Feb. 29 for a probable cause hearing, he said.
