Son of slain Chinese food delivery man arrested on drug, gun charges

LAWRENCE — Local and state police conducting a warrant sweep yesterday stumbled across an apparent drug-dealing operation, arresting one man on cocaine, marijuana and gun charges.

Jabed Nguyen, 22, of 168 Union St., is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana.

Nguyen, according to police, is the son of a Chinese restaurant delivery man killed July 30, 2009, while delivering a bogus food order to the Stadium Housing project near Lawrence High School.

At 10 p.m., Thu Nguyen, 59, of Methuen, was struck by an assailant. He fell to the ground and fractured his skull on the sidewalk, and later died. Two men were charged with murder, and one was found guilty last October of involuntary manslaughter.

Daniel Lee Lopez, a Lawrence resident, was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in state prison. Another man charged in the assault on Nguyen was found not guilty of unarmed robbery. Nguyen was a Vietnamese immigrant who worked multiple jobs, including delivering food for the Evergreen Restaurant on Union Street, to support his family, including his wife and three children.

Yesterday, his youngest son was found by police in a room filled with drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as cash and ammunition. A gun was found in the bathroom, along with a large quantity of marijuana.

According to a police report on the arrest, at around 8 a.m., members of the local police Special Operations Unit joined members of the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension squad and agents from the Massachusetts Parole Board to arrest a man believed to be living at 168 South Union St.

While there, police were unable to locate the man they were looking for, and were told by residents of the building that the man had just left for work.

As police were interviewing residents of the apartment, they saw another man appear and then quickly disappear.
