---- — LAWRENCE — A white powder enclosed in a card sent to a local office does not appear to be suspicious, police and firefighters said last night.

A worker in a counseling office at 599 Canal St. found the suspicious powder at 12:30 p.m. yesterday.

The woman who opened the card said her hands felt itchy, police said.

Police and firefighters immediately responded. A hazardous materials team comprised of specially trained firefighters along with FBI agents also responded to the "suspicious powder" report.

The team, in special suits, removed the card and powder from the office. Preliminary testing showed "the sample presented no hazard," said Deputy Fire Chief Brian Murphy.

The powder was sent to a state laboratory for further precautionary testing, Murphy said.

No injuries were reported.
