BOSTON — Gov. Deval Patrick signed special legislation yesterday to correct a legal technicality that had prevented about 100 employees in the Lawrence Public Schools from receiving health insurance coverage with the Group Insurance Commission.
“We thank the governor and the Legislature for their swift action to restore health insurance to these teachers and other school employees,” Lawrence Teacher’s Union President Frank McLaughlin said.
“This bill gives them the security they need to continue serving the students and families of Lawrence,” McLaughlin said.
The bill, which was sponsored by State Rep. Marcos Devers, D-Lawrence, and former state Rep. David Torrisi, D-North Andover, also establishes the school employees’ eligibility for membership in the Lawrence Retirement System.
“Representative Devers was especially instrumental in guiding this bill through the Legislature,” said McLaughlin. “His support was crucial in restoring these benefits.”
“This bill addresses an unintended inequity for several committed school employees and members of the Lawrence community,” Devers said.
