---- — METHUEN — Police closed Lowell Street/Route 110 temporarily yesterday morning after clearing a five-car crash near 591 Lowell St. in which several people were injured.
The road was closed temporarily westbound from Sawyer Street starting just after the 6:32 a.m. accident, although traffic was still running eastbound. Eastbound cars were diverted through the parking lot of a business adjacent to the crash scene.
For about 45 minutes, westbound traffic, headed toward Dracut, was being diverted up Sawyer Street to Route 113, leading to traffic delays on Route 110. At one point, traffic was backed up nearly to the I-93 interchange.
Police said several people were injured, including one who sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The injured were taken to Holy Family and Lawrence General hospitals by Methuen Fire Department ambulance. Mutual aid ambulances were called in from Salem, N.H., and Andover to help with the injured.
The accident is under investigation by Officer Elvin Alarcon.
