Merrimack Valley in a minute: Celtics foundation to unveil new school gym

LAWRENCE — Boston Celtics players Chris Wilcox, Courtney Lee and Co-owner Wyc Grousbeck will celebrate the unveiling of the newly renovated gymnasium at the Bruce School today at 9 a.m.

The project is the second of its kind as part of the 2011-2012 Celtics Player Choice Grant in which the players from last year’s team voted to invest the money from the grant into renovating gymnasiums in and around Boston to increase access and opportunity for youth. The project, overseen by the Shamrock Foundation with the support of Good Sports (www.goodsports.org), includes new backboards, rims, flooring, wall padding, paint and custom Celtics wall graphics along with a new motor for a motorized hoop.

During the assembly Wilcox and Lee will address the students during an assembly on the importance of making healthy choices and some keys to success.

Pneumonia clinic planned

NORTH ANDOVER — The North Andover Health Department plans to offer a pneumonia clinic where the vaccine will be administered. Health Director Susan Sawyer said the clinic will take place Jan. 30. The precise time and location have yet to be worked out.

Family Service, Inc. beginning therapeutic mentoring

LAWRENCE — Family Service, Inc. has announced it will be providing therapeutic mentoring services to children in the Merrimack Valley. Therapeutic mentoring provides one-to-one, community based support for children struggling with mental health issues. In collaboration with a clinical therapist, therapeutic mentors work with children to teach and practice age-appropriate behaviors, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution techniques in real world settings.
