North Andover Democrats to pick delegates to state convention

NORTH ANDOVER — Local Democrats will be gathering at the Stevens Memorial Library for their annual caucus Feb. 13.

Hosted by the North Andover Democratic Town Committee, the caucus will begin at 7 p.m. and will elect six men and six women to serve as delegates to the Democratic State Convention in June.

Since this is an odd-numbered year, the convention will not be endorsing candidates but will discuss and debate issues, according to Phil DeCologero, a North Andover resident who serves on the Democratic State Committee.

“Any Democrat living in North Andover, who was registered to vote by December 31, can participate,” DeCologero explained.

The doors will open for registration at 6:30 p.m. Any local Democrat who attends can run for a spot in the North Andover delegation. This year’s convention will be held in Lowell on June 1.

The issues convention serves to “keep activists engaged,” said DeCologero, who attended his first Democratic State Convention in 2007.

One of the purposes of the gathering is to make sure the party’s platform is “inclusive and respectful,” he said.

“At our 2013 convention, the delegates selected by North Andover Democrats will debate and adopt our platform for the next four years; catch up; and network with organizers from around the commonwealth while also hearing from some exciting future leaders of our party,” Democratic State Chairman John Walsh said.

The caucus will be held in the first floor conference room at the library. Residents are encouraged to contact Phil DeCologero with any questions by emailing him at NADemocrats@gmail.com.
