NORTH ANDOVER — Police found a backpack yesterday afternoon that they believe was tossed into the woods by a car break-in suspect, according to Lt. Charles Gray.
Michael Robertson, 24, of 479 Sutton St., was arrested late Tuesday night and charged with two counts of breaking and entering a vehicle in the nighttime and receiving stolen property. Robertson is now held without bail at Middleton jail for violating his probation on an earlier charge of breaking into a car.
A resident of Sutton Street called police at 8:48 p.m. Tuesday to report a suspicious man with a backpack was near his car. The resident discovered a GPS device and loose change were missing from the car.
Police pursued a suspect that matched the description of the suspicious man. A state police helicopter and canine unit joined the search.
Officers found Robertson climbing over a fence at Lawrence Municipal Airport and arrested him.
Officer Michael Reardon found the backpack, which police believe Robertson tossed into the woods near the airport, at 3:30 p.m. yesterday, Gray said.
Police are now investigating whether items in the backpack were stolen from cars whose owners reported thefts, Gray said. Officers found on Robertson some change and various gift cards, which they believe were taken from other cars in the Sutton Street area.
