Police arrest burglary suspect

NORTH ANDOVER — A Lowell man was arrested after he tried to break into a Russell Street home while the homeowner was there.

Police Chief Paul Gallagher said the homeowner called 911 a little after 10 a.m. and was able to provide a description of the man who ran down the street wearing a grey hoodie, cargo shorts, glasses and a black backpack.

Officer Daniel Crevier spotted a man matching the description but without the grey hoodie and turned his cruiser around to talk to the man

But the man ran away down East Water Street and into a home, apparently that of a family member, Gallagher said.

Crevier ordered the man to come out of the house and when he did he was still wearing the backpack, Gallagher said.

The man, identified as Gerald Arpin, 31, Lowell, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property over $250.

Gallagher said Crevier found a "cutting tool," on Arpin which they believe was used to cut a screen at the Russell Street home.

Gallagher said officers also recovered the grey hoodie Arpin was wearing, but had thrown in the bushes.

"We had a couple of breaks in that area during the weekend and we are attempting to determine whether he is a possible suspect in those," Gallagher said.
