Police Log: Man charged with stealing frozen codfish

LAWRENCE — A man tried to steal nine bags of frozen codfish and a package of cookies from the Market Basket store on Essex Street Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Officers Gary Yancey and William Green were sent to the store at 700 Essex St., at 12:32 p.m. for a report of a shoplifter fighting with store managers.

A store manager told the officers the man, later identified as James Thorn, 33, 45 Bridge Road, Salisbury, had tried to conceal nine bags of Goya Bacalao frozen codfish and a package of Keebler Coconut Dreams cookies in his jacket and leave the store.

The frozen codfish was valued at $59.31, and the cookies were valued at $2.50, police said.

Thorn was arrested and taken to the police station.

When he was removed from the cruiser, he took off running toward the Wendy's parking lot but fell and was taken back into custody.

Thorn was charged with shoplifting under $100 and was declared a trespasser by store officials, meaning if he goes back to the store he can be arrested.

Flat-screen televisions stolen from apartment

HAVERHILL — Two 19-inch flat-screen televisions were stolen from an Evergreen Drive apartment, police said.

Cheryl Capodilupo told police Unit 73, the apartment the televisions were taken from, is being temporarily maintained as a place that residents can go for the day while work is being done to their units.

The unit was cleaned on Monday and the televisions were there at that time, Capodilupo said.

But when she went to the unit Wednesday morning, she found the rugs and furniture, floors and counters covered with a powdery substance, and the televisions missing.

She told police entry to the apartment may have been gained through the rear door, which was found unlocked.

Detective Capt. Alan Ratte said the investigation is continuing and there are suspects in the case.
