William McDermott, a prominent elections lawyer who steered the city through its recent redistricting and advised dozens of state and local candidates – including Mayor William Lantigua – was struck and killed by an SUV while crossing a South Boston Street late Wednesday.
He was 66.
The 33-year-old driver of the vehicle has not been charged, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley. Wark said the investigation is continuing, but said police do not believe the driver had been drinking.
Police are not releasing the driver's name.
“Bill's been a mainstay in Lawrence politics for over a decade,” said City Councilor Marc LaPlante. “He was the power behind the throne when it came to redistricting.
He was also a go-to guy when there were needs for recounts and any kind of questions the city might have about elections. He was involved in Democratic party politics, but he was always professional to individuals on both sides of the aisle.”
