LAWRENCE — A young deer wandered into a fenced-in ball park area, got trapped and killed itself trying to get out, police said.
Chief John Romero said the deer wandered into the area behind South Lawrence East School just after 1:30 p.m. yesterday. Witnesses told police the animal appeared to panic when it could not find its way out of the area, which is surrounded by chain-link fencing.
The deer ran into the fence several times with its head, appearing to try to ram its way out, Romero said. It died of injuries from hitting the fence and was removed by animal control officials, he said.
