NORTH ANDOVER – For the last couple of days, a crew from the Department of Public Works has been installing an 8-inch water main along a section of Dale Street between Smolak Farms and the Boxford town line.
Public Works Director Bruce Thibodeau explained that the purpose of this project is to “loop” the water delivery system. If a water pipe in the Ironwood Drive-Coventry Lane area ruptures, the main being installed along Dale Street will enable residents in that part of the town to have uninterrupted water service, he said.
It is generally recommended that a water delivery system have “redundancies,” or additional pipes that help prevent a loss of service, he said.
The installation of a couple of hundred feet or so of mains along outer Dale Street is part of the town’s capital improvement plan, he said. After the new mains have been installed, that section of Dale Street will be repaved, most likely next year, Thibodeau said.
The repaving will be done under the Chapter 90 program, which provides state money to towns and cities for road improvements.
