Salem tree lights up next week

SALEM — The Salem Lions Club’s annual Christmas tree lighting will be Thursday.

The lighting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Common, located at the corner of Bridge and Main streets.

NECC to host genocide forum

HAVERHILL — Northern Essex Community College’s Contemporary Affairs Club and Amnesty International Chapter will host a panel discussion on comparative genocides on Wednesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St.

This forum is open to the public and will be held in the E Building, Room 155. The event is co-sponsored by the Armenian Genocide Education Committee of Merrimack Valley, working in conjunction with Facing History and Ourselves, which has been offering programs throughout area high schools and colleges since 2007.

Moderator will be Albert Movsesian, a community activist. He will be joined by Haverhill Gazette columnist Tom Vartabedian, who will speak about the Armenian Genocide.

The forum is a follow-up to a previous classroom discussion on genocide hosted by the club, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Russell, professor of history and government. More information is available from Russell at srussell@necc.mass.edu or 978-556-3237.

Council on Aging luncheon is Dec. 6

HAVERHILL — The Oxford will serve a beef stew lunch at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St., on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the Citizens Center.
