NORTH ANDOVER – Twelve student musicians recently were chosen to represent North Andover High School at the Massachusetts Eastern District Music Festival Jan. 12 at Lowell High School.
The festival is a yearly event sponsored by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association. After auditions of more than 1,200 students from more than 50 public and private schools held Nov. 17, 450 students from grades nine through 12 were selected to participate in this event.
The program is offered by the association as an enrichment opportunity to talented young people. The students were selected to perform in the Senior District Concert Band, Orchestra, Chorus and Jazz Ensemble. They will rehearse with guest conductors and then perform in the Jan. 12 concert.
North Andover High School has seven vocalists participating in the District Chorus: Jessica Carroll, alto; Jacqueline Foley, soprano; Mark Fuller, bass; Emilier Gil, tenor; Garrett Holman, tenor; Gabriel Rosa, tenor; and Arslan Sheikh, bass.
Four NAHS musicians will participate in the District Band: David Baylies, trumpet; Erik Klose, tenor saxophone; Alexander Langston, trombone; and David Rice, tenor saxphone.
North Andover High School will be represented for the first time in the District Orchestra by Yunji Kim, a violinist.
In addition to being accepted into the Eastern District Music Festival, five of the NAHS musicians and singers also received All-State recommendations. This enables a student to audition for the All-State Music Festival held annually in March in Boston. To receive an All-State recommendation, the student must finish in the top 50 percent of all those students chosen to participate at the district level. Jacqueline Foley, Mark Fuller Emilier Gil, Arslan Sheikh and David Rice were invited to audition for the All-State Chorus and Band.
