Man steps out of car, is killed on I-95

Man dies after getting out of car on Interstate 95

NEWBURY – Police are trying to determine why a Maine man stopped his car in the right-hand travel lane of Interstate 95 and then stepped out of his car into fast-moving traffic.

Police have yet to identify the man killed Saturday evening near Scotland Road when he was struck by a Seabrook, N.H. woman and crushed to death. Initial investigations conducted by the state police reveal the victim was travelling northbound in the first right travel lane around 8:35 p.m. when he stopped his Nissan SUV and exited the vehicle from the driver’s side.

A Seabrook, N.H. woman traveling the same direction in a Hyundai sedan swerved to avoid hitting the victim but instead sideswiped the vehicle, striking him. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene after being crushed between the two cars, and a medical examiner was called to the scene.

Police continue to investigate why the victim stopped his vehicle on the highway and are hoping to determine what his motivation was. Yesterday afternoon, a state police trooper said the victim’s family has yet to be notified, prompting the department not to release his identity or where he lived.

The first and second lanes of the four-lane highway were closed for two hours as a result of the accident, and both cars were towed from the scene, according to state police.
