Giant crustacean awaits cooker

PLAISTOW, N.H. - This meal is heftier than a sack of potatoes, as hard as a bowling ball and will require at least eight sticks of butter.

A giant lobster weighing 22 pounds is on sale for $155 at Donahue's Fish Market on Route 125.

"We'll cook him here for anyone who buys him," said store manager Tina Connell. "I know no one has a pot that size."

The lobster does not have a name, but people can call him "Buddy" if they want, Connell said.

The crustacean found its way to Plaistow yesterday, bought during store owner Mark Donahue's fish-buying trip to Boston.

Donahue noticed a fish dealer holding the massive lobster and singing to it, Connell said. Donahue bought it and brought it to his store, where it is waiting in a tank to become someone's meal.

The Donahue lobster is nearly halfway to breaking the world record for its species.

According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest crustacean ever found was a North Atlantic lobster caught in 1977 off the coast of Nova Scotia. It was 44 pounds 6 ounces.

Connell said her store has sold a few 24-pound lobsters during its 30-year existence, but nothing this big in many years.

Average lobsters weight 1<+><+>/2 to four pounds, Connell said.

Last August, Bradford Seafood in Haverhill, Mass., put a 20-pound lobster up for sale for $180.
