Elections held in Andover, North Andover

ANDOVER — Two new members each were elected to the School Committee and Board of Selectmen in North Andover, and an incumbent selectman survived a re-election challenge during town elections yesterday.

Tracy Watson and Planning Board Chairman Richard Nardella won two open spots on the Board of Selectmen over Donald Stewart and Joe Edward Smith in North Andover.

For the School Committee, Stanley Limpert and Chris Nobile campaigned together and won together in North Andover.

North Andover residents also voted overwhelmingly in favor of a nonbinding question on whether the town should replace the Open Town Meeting form of government.

In Andover, Selectman Mary Lyman was re-elected to a third term yesterday, defeating challenger Peter Cotch by just 260 votes. In the School Committee race, Dennis Forgue defeated Gregory Rigby by 224 votes.

Lyman, 50, said she was happy to win, but celebrating would be short-lived with a $2 million budget shortfall on town leaders' plates.

"It's right back to the budget now. We're not done yet. We still have some big decisions to make," she said from a small party at her home. "Last night, I was aware that this could be my last vote. I really don't think you can take anything for granted. ... I was surprised."

Lyman said she would also make the Youth Center a priority this term.
