Habitat homes get a boost from HUD workers

LAWRENCE — Habitat for Humanity picked up a nice donation last week courtesy of some concerned federal workers.

A team of Housing and Urban Development employees donated $2,000 to the Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity. The money will be used to rebuilt Habitat homes on Parker and Market streets that were destroyed by a seven-alarm fire in January. In April, the HUD team also volunteered at the site.

This year, HUD invested $2.7 million in Lawrence for community development and affordable housing. The city used $140,000 of this fund to support the cost of demolition at the fire site.

HUD, the nation's housing agency, is committed to increasing and preserving home ownership, creating affordable housing for low-income Americans, and helping the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and AIDS.
