Methuen teen charged in break-ins

METHUEN — Police arrested a teenager who they say broke into his relatives' homes while they attended a wedding.

Neil Patel, 17, of 12 Bramble Hill Road, was charged with three counts of breaking and entering during the daytime with intent to commit a felony and two counts of larceny over $250, Lt. Greg Gallant said.

Two others received summonses: Brian Baez, 18, and an unidentified juvenile.

Police investigated break-ins Saturday on Bramble Hill Road and Chestnut Street, and another Sunday on Hitching Post Lane. They realized the victims were all relatives, leading police to believe another family member was responsible. The suspects stole $4,600, Gallant said.

Salem, N.H., police responded to an attempted break-in Sunday in which the victim happened to be home. The Salem resident is also related to Patel, Gallant said.

Salem police caught some of the suspects after a chase on foot. They did not catch Patel, however.

Patel went back to one of his relatives' homes in Methuen and tried to return the stolen money.

Patel was later arrested in Salem by Officer Matthew Bistany.
