METHUEN — A 40-year-old city man was charged with his third drunken-driving offense, after he nearly struck a police officer directing traffic at a Broadway funeral home, police said.
Officer Elvin Alarcon called for assistance about 6:08 p.m. Tuesday, after he tried to stop the driver and was nearly struck as the driver sped away.
Police said Alarcon saw the driver stumble out of a nearby pub before getting into his car and that the driver was visibly intoxicated.
After nearly hitting Alarcon, the driver ran the red light and turned onto Oakland Avenue. Police were able to stop the car on Pelham Street near the Five Corners intersection.
The driver, identified as Robert Ryan Jr., 330 Hampshire Road, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger, failure to stop for an officer, driving without a license, red light violation, and driving while under the influence of alcohol third offense, police said.
He was also charged with a civil rights violation after he repeatedly used a racial epithet when referring to an officer, police said.
