Marathon bombing victim Jeff Bauman to be honored at dinner

HAVERHILL — Everyone has seen his photo, it seems.

He’s the young man in a wheelchair being pushed away from the site of the Boston Marathon explosion, his legs ravaged.

He’s also the man lauded as a hero because, after surgery to remove his lower legs, he was able to give police a detailed description of one of the bombing suspects.

This week, Jeff Bauman will visit Haverhill to be honored at the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce’s 97th Annual Dinner.

The event will be Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at DiBurro’s function hall.

The annual dinner is traditionally a celebration of the chamber’s recent successes and the opportunity to communicate to members and the public the future direction of the organization. This year, the chamber has added a “We Are Boston Strong” theme.

Attending the dinner will be professionals from the areas of athletics, law enforcement, health care and media who were closely tied to the bombing tragedy at the 117th Boston Marathon on April 15.

Speakers will include Dave McGillivray, director of the race, who will address an audience for the first time since the tragedy. A discussion panel, to including Boston Police Department Superintendent Frank Mancini and Boston EMS Superintendent in Chief Brendan Kearney, will be moderated by Carl Stevens, award-winning reporter for WBZ NewsRadio. Stevens will host the second half of the evening’s program. Additionally, local residents who administered first aid to bombing victims will be honored during the evening.

Bauman will attend the event as a Boston Strong advocate and supporter of victim assistance in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. The chamber has made a donation to a fund supporting Bauman’s recovery.

The chamber will also make a donation to The One Fund from the proceeds of ticket sales and a special raffle for two VIP tickets to see the band Heart on June 28. The tickets were donated by the family of the evening’s highest award winner, Elaine Barker, in support of The One Fund.

To reserve tickets for the dinner or for more information, please contact the chamber at 978-373-5663 or www.HaverhillChamber.com.
