Tewksbury man injured in Andover bicycle accident

By Bill Kirk

---- — ANDOVER — A Tewksbury man was injured yesterday when he collided with a landscaping truck while riding his bicycle on Osgood Street.

Robert Herrick, 66, sustained facial lacerations and was complaining of leg pains after the 11:24 a.m. crash, according to Andover Police Lt. John Pathiakis. The man was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of “cuts and bruises,” Pathiakis said. The man’s condition was not available yesterday.

Herrick was riding north on Osgood Street, toward Bellevue Road, when he swerved out into the road to avoid two pedestrians who were walking on the shoulder.

As he did, a truck towing a landscaping trailer was driving by. According to witnesses, the man’s bike struck the back corner of the trailer and he was sent tumbling off his bicycle.

Pathiakis said no charges would be filed against the driver, who was operating a Randall Landscaping truck.

The driver, who didn’t want to give his name, said he didn’t even know the accident had happened until he looked in his side mirror and saw the man in the street. He stopped immediately.

The pedestrians said they were walking along the side of the road and that as the bike rider went by, he swerved out just as the truck was going by. They said the truck also swerved out.

Pathiakis said it was just an unfortunate accident.

“The truck with the trailer swerved out to stay clear of the pedestrians, but the bike did, too,” he said. “He (Herrick) got caught between the pedestrians and the trailer.”

A stretch of Osgood Street from Blanchard Street to Bellevue was closed for about 30 minutes as police, ambulance and fire crews worked at the scene.
