LAWRENCE — Police are investigating the shooting of a taxi driver in an attempted robbery last night.
The Yellow Cab driver stopped shortly after 9 p.m. in the Route 114 Plaza near the Sovereign Bank for two men who requested a ride to the Beacon Projects, according to Police Chief John Romero.
“Once he dropped them off at the Beacon Projects, he said the two men tried to rob him,” Romero said.
“They fired two rounds into the car. One of them hit him in the leg,” he said.
The taxi driver was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of what police described as “non-life-threatening injuries.”
Romero said he can’t recall the last time a cab driver was wounded.
“Usually, it’s a robbery,” Romero said.
“They’re targets because they are out all night and carry money. These individuals who rob cab drivers are nothing but thugs. It has been relatively quiet in terms of cab driver robberies lately,” the chief said.
Lawrence detectives were interviewing the wounded driver at the hospital last night. Police were still looking for the suspects who fled the scene.
