HAVERHILL — Police said they have identified a suspect in Sunday’s shooting on Freeman Street in which a man was seriously wounded and have issued an arrest warrant.
Learde Rodriguez, 23, whose last known address was in Haverhill, is wanted by police for assault with intent to murder. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call police at 978-373-1212.
Police were notified at 5:49 p.m. Sunday of a shooting on Freeman Street, which is in the Mount Washington neighborhood.
When officers arrived they found a 19-year-old Haverhill man lying in the street near 43 Freeman St., suffering from multiple gun shot wounds.
Police would not discuss any motive for the shooting. The victim, whose name is not being released by police at this time, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and was later transferred to a Boston hospital.
As of yesterday, his condition was listed as critical but stable, according to police spokesman Lt. Robert Pistone.
At about the same time police were responding to Freeman Street on a report of a shooting, a black Honda Civic arrived at the police station with two people, a Haverhill male and female, police said.
“The vehicle had its rear window shot out,” Police Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said on Monday. “The couple entered the station and reported that their friend had been shot on Freeman Street.”
Thompson said the couple had driven the 19-year-old man to Freeman Street to pick up some belongings from an apartment in a multi-family building. He said witnesses told police there was a group of men in the area at the time the man was shot.
“A group of people were seen congregating near the area, several houses away from where the victim was found,” Thompson said.
