Police crack down on drinking

First Salisbury sobriety checkpoint since 2008 nets 16 arrests

SALISBURY — With summer in full swing, police have been working hard to crack down on drunk drivers leaving local bars.

Ten alleged drunken drivers were arrested within three hours early Saturday morning the result of a sobriety checkpoint conducted by state and neighboring police departments off Route 1A near the Star of the Sea Parish.

In the hours leading to the sobriety checkpoint, state police conducted a saturation patrol of the surrounding areas. In all, 476 vehicles were approached by state police troopers, aided by Salisbury and Newburyport police officers, and 16 arrests made. Three people were arrested for minor in possession of alcohol while three others charged with previous warrants. In addition to arresting 16 people, police issued 96 citations during the operation.

All but one of those arrested complied with police. However, Anthony J. Crisafi, 26, 10 Pleasant St., Salisbury, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (second offense), fail to stop for police and resisting arrest after he tried to evade the checkpoint and then struggled when told he was to be arrested.

Stationed strategically on Route 1A and Ferry Road, state police troopers began slowing vehicle down around midnight. Motorists were advised that they were driving through a checkpoint and routine questions were asked. Should troopers and local police determine that a motorist might be driving impaired, they were directed to a staging area inside the church’s parking lot.

There, a massive 52-foot-long truck called the BAT-mobile was parked. Inside the lot, motorists suspected of drunken driving were interviewed by police. Those arrested were brought inside the BAT-mobile (Blood Alcohol Testing) where they were given the opportunity to take a blood alcohol test. Those deemed drunk were placed under arrest and booked inside the truck. Also arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol were:
