NEWBURYPORT — Big changes are coming to Olde Fashioned Sunday today, as the perennial Yankee Homecoming favorite is set for a major revamp, event organizers said.
“Olde Fashioned Sunday has become a bit old fashioned if you will,” said Jason Lacroix, president of Yankee Homecoming. “So I like to refer to this as the Not So Olde Fashioned Sunday.”
The event — held today on Bartlet Mall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — will still maintain its old fashioned charm, as annual favorites like the antique car show and fireman’s muster will be back once again, but Lacroix said an effort has been taken to add fun new events to help create more of a carnival atmosphere.
“We’ve completely revamped the layout, even the stage is in a different location, and half of that whole grassy area is going to be a carnival midway,” Lacroix said. “We have two very large inflatable obstacle courses, and also have one of those big inflatable slides, and then we have about a dozen side games, carnival games if you will.”
Another new arrival to Olde Fashioned Sunday this year will be Atlantic Pro Wrestling, a local, independent wrestling promotion that holds most of its shows at the Newbury Fire Hall. The APW Superstars will be taking the ring from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and then again from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and the show will be suitable for the entire family.
“We’re excited to have them,” Lacroix said. “I’ve seen bits and pieces from them but I haven’t seen them live, I’m kind of excited.”
In addition, the day will feature food vendors selling items like hot dogs, hamburgers and clam chowder, along with pony rides, the roaming railroad, a dunk tank, the children’s basketball shooting contest, a pet show music and more.
